Speed Development

SPEED AND LATERAL MOVEMENT

One of the most important components of our training program at each level is the development of linear speed and change of direction. The ability to sprint fast, accelerate, and decelerate is a vital component in one’s success in power/speed sports. So whether you’re utilizing a lot of stopping, starting, and cutting playing tennis, basketball, volleyball, and soccer or you’re using a lot of linear speed as a 100-meter sprinter in track, a baseball player chasing down a fly ball, or a wide receiver running a go route, becoming efficient in your movement by way of proper sprint mechanics and learning how to properly apply force at the exact angles will allow the athlete to maximize performance thus allowing the athlete to progress further in sport. So much performance can be lost in technique, not to mention the lost time because of injury. This can be avoided by identifying and clearing up movement dysfunction and developing proper technique over time. In our training program there’s a premium put on developing movement quality from dynamic warm-ups to the weight room to our speed development.
SPEED 101: Stride length is affected by relative strength, posture, limb length and the impulse of power put into the ground.
Improper Mechanics
Proper Mechanics

As an athlete progresses from one level to the next the more the inches count. One of the many problems the athlete to the left has is an extreme case of external rotation at the hip joint, causing improper foot strike, and cutting off precious inches on each stride. The cause can range from shortened and weak musculature to an improper motor pattern ingrained at a young age. Through drills, corrective exercises, various types of sprints, and dedication from the athlete this problem can be resolved. A couple of inches, it doesn’t sound like much, but over the 23 strides it took to run this 40 yard sprint those inches add up to the tune of 6 to 9.5 feet. Couple that with the other Inefficient Sprint Mechanics this athlete has and that can be the difference in a running back going to a senior camp and running the all important 40 in 4.7 and having to pay for school, or running a 4.4 and attending college on a full athletic scholarship. SPEED is the name of the game so don’t be left behind.

To be FAST one must not only have GREAT Relative STRENGTH but be able to display POWER in the most efficient way possible, through PROPER Sprint Mechanics.

24 In a race all the runners run. But only one gets the prize. You know that, don’t you? So run in a way that will get you the prize. 25 All who take part in the games train hard. They do it to get a crown that will not last. But we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 So I do not run like someone who doesn’t run toward the finish line. I do not fight like a boxer who hits nothing but air. 27 No, I train my body and bring it under control. Then after I have preached to others, I myself will not break the rules and fail to win the prize.
